The Significance

Broader Changes

The way learners interact with each other has changed. A major question in education is how to maximise the uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education taking into account that ICT provides a digital window to global access of information and to the capacity to interact in new ways in the creation of knowledge.

The Australian Government is investing over $2.4 billion to support the effective integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in Australian schools in line with the Government’s broader education initiatives, including the new Australian curriculum.

Implications for education

The push towards 1:1 computing and the increased expectations for teachers to use technology has had significant implications on teachers and the teaching profession. There are many obstacles towards the successful implementation of technology-based pedagogy, the most significant being teacher attitudes and beliefs.

Furthermore, the question of responsibility is an important one. Are teachers expected to maintain the technology required, at the same time as developing content and delivering effective pedagogy? Is there sufficient training/retraining to facilitate this?
